bob dylan- chronicles

i just finished reading this.  It's like Dylan was a sponge.  He was engaged in everything that he came in contact with.  It's amazing how insightful his observations are.  If anything, he teaches me that in order to make something truly genuine, you have to know about the world.  You have to know about people, literature, art, and music.  You have to subject yourself to everything!

Another thing that I have learned is that Dylan was never "original" in the purest sense of the word.  His dynamism and supposed originality comes from a long lineage of folk, rock and roll, and blues players.  Dylan is a thief, he takes this and that, and he free associates words and chords.  In the process of constant referencing, Dylan creates something that is truly original and unique.  He finds his voice in the music of others.
