I weigh in on : urban outfitters

Over the past couple months Urban Outfitters has been stirring up all kinds of trouble and making many designers worry.  I've been meaning to weigh in on the whole thing, but I haven't had the chance until now.  The email blasts I get are downright ugly.  But because of that they are incredibly perplexing.  Urban outfitters taps into the language of Early 90s internet gif nostalgia, Thrift store signage, and School flyer mundane-ness.  Are they doing it just to be ironic? Probably.  But everything these days is so "designed".  It's nice to see the funkiness, the imperfection.  I can't help but find these flyers attention getting, intriguing, and challenging to me.  Isn't that what good design should do?
