rene magritte's "this is not a pipe" asks the question "what is it exactly that we as artists do?" We are not creators in the sense that we are making actual objects that function and have use.  Representational work is are merely emulating the idea of objects, or the representation of how they appear.  It seems self-evident, but the artist makes a choice not to make an actual pipe, but a portrayal of what a pipe is.
