Demetrius Oliver

Yesterday I had the privilege of seeing artist Demetrius Oliver speak about his work at the Fine Arts Building on Broad Street. Oliver uses his body as a tool, and his work is often performance driven. Much of his work exhibits the documentation of an experience that he has put himself through. In one piece, Oliver dragged a piece of bacon through dust to show the processes of addition and subtraction. As the dust accumulates on the bacon, it leaves the white surface.

In other works, Oliver uses his body as a canvas, experimenting with the addition of alternative materials. In the work Till, Oliver covers himself in what appears to be chocolate icing, transforming the perception and texture of his skin.

A piece of his is currently on display at the Fine Arts Building, I recommend that you check it out!
