books yo, books

I just picked this book up. Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth is a graphic novel by Chris Ware. The book is about Jimmy, a man who goes to meet his father for the very first time. So far I love the book, because reality and subconscious states court each other in very interesting ways. Daydreams are often interjected into reality when the reader least expects it. Also the narrative flows very non-linearly (word?) as sometimes the reader is confronted with content that moves from left to right. At other times, panels can be read as events that are happening in simultaneity. The book really pushes the conventions of comics, with things like diagrams, paper cutouts, and mock-advertisements. It's tragic and comic, and what I think to be a pretty accurate depiction of a human experience. Go get it and read it, so we can talk about it!

I'm also reading this book on the Situationist International, a post-WWII avant garde group. They are responsible for a lot of really interesting concepts, including psychogeography, the derive, and detournement. Cool stuff.
